 My Research

As I was working on this project I uncovered many great sources of information and data that helped me. Through online reasearch I discovered skincancer.org, The National Cancer Institute, The American Cancer Society, and the American Academy of Dermatology. These resources were invaluable for developing my personal understanding of cancers and melanoma in particular. They all focused on spreading basic introductory knowledge about these ailments to the general public.

As I dived further into my research, I used the online database eLibrary. This database helped me uncover more scientific articles and scholarly journals related to melanoma. In particular; Katharine Gammon's "Immunotherapy" for Popular Science and  Cheryl Guttman Krader's "Opportunities and challenges with new treatments for advanced cancer"  for Dermatology Times.

I also used eLibrary to find news articles about treatments I was researching. Several of these were;  "Excitement over new immunotherapy drugs"  by  Marie McCullough, a reporter for Tribune Business News, "Merck Cancer Drug Advances in Immunotherapy Race" by Peter Loftus for the Wall Street Journal, and "Merck Drug Keytruda Effective Against 3 Cancers" by Linda A. Johnson for ABC News. The latter is a highly interesting article that covers the discussion of Keytruda at the American Association for Cancer Research meeting that was held in Philadelphia on April 19.

Finally, I was assigned a BioExpo Mentor. My mentor was Doctor Sally Thompson-Iritani, who is currently the Direcotr of the Office of Animal Welfare at the university of Washington. She was very helpful in directing me towards additional sources for my research. In paricular, she reccomended the Fred Hutchison Cancer Research Center and gave me the links to articles about several cancer treatment methods that researchers are currently developing.
